Thoughts: God’s blessing upon the home of the faith-ful.       

 

Prayer:   Father, we thank You for the revelation of Your Word the blessings that You bestow on those who yield their lives to You, not because of their holiness, but because of their faith[1]. We remember the beautiful and powerful Old Testament example of Rahab, a prostitute who reached out to Your servants for a “true token” of Your mercy. In simple faith and obedience she took the object of such from the spies that were sent by Joshua to scout the doomed city of Jericho and placed it upon her house [a brothel], resulting in her house, family, and possessions miraculously being spared the destruction that fell upon the city that night. May each of us, no matter what our background, lifestyle, or domestic circumstances, exhibit that same earnestness to experience the grace of the sovereign God, to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand as the apostle Peter wrote, and to cast the whole of our care upon You. May each of us experience Your  blessings: spiritual and earthly, blessings in their multitude, blessings that endure forever, in the full measure that You would have us do, according to Your knowledge of what is best of us.   This we pray in the Name of Jesus,   Who commenced His first public sermon with the word, “Blessed”. Amen.

Amazing survival and recovery from recent near tragedy evokes memory of another amazing season of recovery  in the life of our senior pastor, Brother Joseph.

As many of our faith constituents were made aware just over a week ago, Brother Joseph suffered a severe fall in our retreat house in the early morning hours of August 13, 2014. The fall, which caused horrific injuries to his kneecaps, his left arm, and the left side of his head, was found by Cardiac Care Unit physicians at the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital to have resulted in a minor heart attack.  A harrowing time indeed for me, having lost three loved ones – family members – in one household years ago, and not wanting to suffer yet another loss!   In a testimony to our Lord’s preserving grace, and the God-given grace of prayer’s power at a time of need, Brother Joseph had a significant turnaround of recovery after a few days, according to his attending internist at Nanticoke.  Brother Joseph’s words to me:  “ You must have been praying hard.”    Indeed I was – actually before the fall even happened, both Brother Joseph and I had been undergoing severe breakthrough pain earlier that night with the vacillations in barometric pressure and heavy rainfall in the preceding hours.  With the length of time and bodily position Brother Joseph had been in following the fall, the outcome could have been much worse, and fatal.

Since last week, Brother Joseph has been in rehabilitation at the Milford Center, where his injuries and condition have been closely monitored. The kneecap injuries were anticipated to involve a three month long, delicate recovery for the damaged kneecaps to fully heal. With thanks to our Lord for the medical staff tending to him in this critical time, Brother Joseph continues to be in our prayers. 

Some two decades ago, when Brother Joseph was sharing his testimony and life experience via radio, one of the broadcasters asked him why do so many terrible things seem to come his way, he answered “ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”  , in the words of a certain man after God’s own heart who had been through many a sore affliction in his day   (Psalm 34:19).    

The near tragedy of a week and a half ago at our retreat house at the Nanticoke River, and subsequent comeback, evokes the experience of our senior pastor's open heart surgery four years ago at Johns Hopkins.  The report of the surgery can be viewed at:  https://sites.google.com/site/openheartsurgeryatjohnshopkins/

The stunningly successful surgery which amazed the hospital staff had its "bumps in the road" according to Dr. Duke Cameron, Chief of Cardiac surgery at Johns Hopkins, who presided over the operation. Twice was Brother Joseph’s heart arrested during the operation, cooled to a temperature of 89 degrees, and moments of internal bleeding occurred. Truly the Lord was carrying our beloved senior pastor during this difficult stretch of life’s journey.  During his recovery Brother Joseph exclaimed to Dr. Cameron, “ You’re a miracle worker!”, to which Dr. Cameron replied by pointing up to Heaven and saying, “There is only One.”

Thoughts: The three “because” promises of God in Psalm 91.

1)      Making the Lord one’s ongoing dwelling place: being kept safe from evil.

2)      Adhering to the Lord as one’s first desire and priority: being brought to safety from evil.

3)      Perceiving and entering into a firsthand awareness of the Lord’s Name ( all that it represents and embodies):  being on spiritual high ground in the face of surrounding evil.

 

Prayer:   Father, we thank and praise You for Your Word’s eclectic and powerful revelation of  Your protective power and activity on behalf of those who trust their lives to You. In the wake of the devastating events that have been transpiring throughout the world by way of the recent and unprecedented Ebola virus creating a worldwide health scare at home and overseas; the military clashes between Israel and Hamas ; the rampaging ISIS terrorist entity that threatens to destabilize the entire Middle East and carry its terrorist ambitions throughout the civilized world; the growing threat of Russian invasion of Ukraine; and by way of the terrible events that occur everyday in so many ways as brought before us so vividly in our high speed information age, lead us by Your Holy Spirit as individuals, communities, and as a nation to find the one true place of true security:  at the foot of the Cross of Your Son Jesus Christ, under the sprinkling of His precious Blood,  sheltered in the strong tower of His mighty Name, yielded to the control of Your mighty hand – the mighty hand of One Who is sovereign over circumstances, that we might become victors rather than victims of such.    This we pray in the Name of Jesus.  Amen.

The full Scripture context of the excerpts above and below, Isaiah 43:2, a precious powerful promise from the lips of Jehovah God, the Almighty, to those who trust and follow Him, follows herewith:  

 

 “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

 

…thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Such was the testimony of our senior pastor, Brother Joseph, on more than one occasion:

  • In an accident and near tragedy fourteen years ago in the confines of the basement floor of our four story Victorian retreat house in Pennsylvania: a portable propane heater burst into a big plume of fire right next to him, singing away the hair on his arm, but leaving him uninjured.  
  • In the driveby shooting he was subjected to in Vidor, Texas, in March 1989, while en route to a mission, in which he was fired upon to be killed.  The six shotgun rifle shots penetrated the windshield and left the side view mirror hanging by a wire. The assailants, driving a white pickup truck, had side swiped Rev. Heggelund’s vehicle, and fired upon it when he tried to pursue the vehicle to get their license plate. Truly, the Lord was with him, and the blood of the Lamb covering him,  in the midst of his passage through the fire.  Hallelujah to the Lamb!

Prayer:    Father, we thank You for the sacrifice of Your Son Jesus, the “Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” , purposed by You not as a crisis management after-thought, but as a divinely all-knowing forethought. May this message of Christ as the burden-taker and rest-giver so take root this day in our spirits by Your Holy Spirit, and lead us to that “Great Exchange”, and so transfigure us that we will shine forth with a “peace that passes all understanding”, leading others to Your Son Jesus, be it as unbelievers coming to Him for the first time, or as believers in troubling, even disillusioning times. This we pray in the Name of Jesus, Who is our peace. Amen.

• Cedric Cuthbert, the night shift custodial manager at Disney's Port Orleans resort, who was downloading child porn last year on his work computer while writing a sermon for his church, where he was the pastor, according to police. Cuthbert pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to six years in prison.

  • · Where is Jesus now, and what is He doing? In Heaven at God’s right hand, ever living to intercede for believers in Him.
  • · How do believers, living in the physical confines of earth, follow Jesus Christ? Through the leadership of the One Who is present in His stead here on earth – the Holy Spirit, Whom Jesus has sent, living in them.
  • · If not a journey in the physical sense of following Jesus that the disciples had, then what type of journey is it, and how do believers in the present make that journey? It is a spiritual journey, a journey of faith authored by the Holy Spirit, a journey made through prayer and the intake of God’s Word.
  • · How do believers keep up with Jesus in this spiritual journey, and keep from getting lost along the way? By continuing in   prayer – a command given to every believer-, by exercising the same utter dependence in Him that Jesus Himself exercised in His Heavenly Father during His earthly life, and by bearing the fruit of that relationship – obeying the will of God.

 

Prayer:  Father, we thank and praise You for Your Son Jesus, Who not only died for us once and for all, but forever lives for us at Your right hand in Heaven – as close to us as a prayer’s breath away. May each of us – believers and non-believers- draw upon these simple but powerfully essential truths about following Jesus. May those of us who are believers discover anew – or discover afresh – the experience of following Him, through the melting, molding, filling, and control of the Holy Spirit in them. May those of us who are not believers take the first step in that journey today - that of calling on the Name of Your Son Jesus and believing on Him as their Savior and Lord. This we pray in the Name of Jesus, Who is the “Good Shepherd”, the “Chief Shepherd”, and that “great Shepherd of the sheep.” Amen.

Our senior pastor, Brother Joseph, during a tragic time in his life, was approached by a medical doctor who remarked that others have committed suicide after going through less than 1 10th. of what he had endured. When asked how he made it, Brother Joseph replied, “ All things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purpose.” ( quoting Romans 8:28), and continued, “ I love God and trust Him to work out the rest.”

Thoughts:  A prayer for those traversing the difficult path of a personal illness or major surgery; a prayer for those with loved ones who are undergoing illness or a major surgery.

Prayer: Father, we thank and praise You for Your Son Jesus, Who for a season left His Heavenly home with you, and traversed this earth experiencing life’s loneliness and adversity for Himself through His death on the Cross. Today we pray especially for those travelling the path of personal illness, whose every step is a painful one – sometimes in the literal sense; and for those travelling the path of  major surgery – who for a season must lie helpless in the physical sense while they are carried by the medical practitioners assigned to treat and care for them during and after surgery. We pray also for those who have loved ones and friends undergoing major illness or surgery,  people who are often experiencing emotionally  the hardship that their ailing, bedridden, hospitalized loved ones are experiencing physically.  May the nail-scarred hand of Your Son Jesus carry them safely to the other side of their ordeals, and that each of us, believers and unbelievers alike, experience our own epiphany of Your Son’s presence at the intuitive level of our spirits, one that even our querying skeptical minds cannot suppress.   This we pray in the Name of Jesus, the Good Shepherd Who said to His followers before going to Heaven to send them His Holy Spirit,  “ I am with you always.”  Amen..

                                           PRAYER REQUESTS AND PRAISE REPORTS.

  • Please keep Brother Joseph in prayer as he prepares for an important medical appointment on July 21, 2014 with his physician at Johns Hopkins; continuing his recovery from a serious two month bout with pneumonia; his day and night struggle with severe chronic polymyalgia pain and with brittle diabetes. His insulin pump, the glucose control therapy that has been his mainstay for over thirteen years, broke down last month. Since that time he has had to rely on intravenously given needles for his intake of insulin, something he cannot do by himself because of his Parkinson’s. We are presently seeking with his provider to get a new insulin pump, and have asked them for a temporary loaner he can use while the process of getting a new pump is underway.
  • On the praise note regarding Brother Joseph: he is free of lymphoma, diagnosed 17 ½ years ago at Scott and White in Texas, and found last year in diagnostic tests to have receded.
  • We are happy to share that the hip surgery of Liv Albert, wife of Brother Joseph’s friend in Illinois for over six decades, went well last month, and that she is undergoing physical therapy during her recovery. Please keep her in prayer for the success of her continued recovery.
  • Please keep me in prayer as I cope with severe chronic lumbar back pain, for which I was taken to the ER last summer during a sciatic nerve breakthrough, and which has been a day and night struggle for me, making it increasingly painful for me to be in a sitting position at length. I have begun using an at-home continuous passive motion therapy device that will hopefully remedy the back pain over time.

Prayer:  Father, we thank and praise You for Your Son Jesus Who taught and exemplified liberty in its true sense of the word: liberty upon a solid foundation. We come before You on  a weekend during which the celebration of our nation’s freedom was juxtaposed this year with the recent and unusually timed threat of Hurricane Arthur along the east coast, the sort of natural occurrence that can test the literal foundations of  homes and businesses in its path. Lead us, as individuals, families, communities, and as a nation, by Your Spirit, to heed the words given by Your Son Jesus Christ calling each of us to build the house of our destiny – in this life and in the life to come –upon a sure foundation.  May each of us hear and obey what the Holy Spirit has to say to us – in the here and now while the opportunity lasts – being fully assured of the rewards of building our destinies upon a sure foundation, and being fully warned of the tragic consequences of building our destinies upon sandy, uncertain sources of security. This we pray in the Name of Jesus, Who is the sure foundation.   Amen.

Thoughts:   The Holy Spirit and our hope.

Prayer:  Father, we thank and praise You for the blessing of hope that You reveal to us through Your Word – hope that relates not to wishful thinking, but to supernatural expectation of Your perfect will being brought to pass – expectation of things that are as yet unseen in the physical realm. Today we consider the assurance of that hope You give us through the Holy Spirit, Who is the “earnest” – down payment – of the great things You have in store in the life to come for those Who yield their lives, and place their trust in Your Son Jesus. Like the budding rose which in due time becomes a blossoming rose, we look to that day in eternity when Your work within our spirits and hearts to make each of us a perfect reflection of Your Son Jesus will burst forth into full and open realization for men and angels alike to see.  As we celebrate that great day when the age of Your Holy Spirit was inaugurated-the age we live in today-we also see the budding flower of faith in Your Son Jesus bursting forth into the Heavenly beauty of its outward expression to demonstrate His grace at work through believers by the power of Your Spirit. May each of us today move from being passive listeners to Your Word to being active participants in the life-giving power of Your Spirit which is just as available to us now as it was to the 120 who received it in the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost.  The lyrics to that much beloved song of the faith “ When the Battle’s Over”, words by Isaac Watts, music by William B. Blake. A song our senior pastor, Brother Joseph, and I have often enjoyed singing in our mission work travels.   The 70th. Anniversary of the historic D-Day invasion, a day which brought hope to an embattled free world, brings to mind the days of Brother Joseph’s youth, when he was but five years of age, with a heart that had already been brought to the Lord, and which during his teenage years would be fully committed to the ministry.

When the Battle’s Over…” was also a favorite of  Brother Joseph’s mother, Florence Stanley, a pure blooded Norwegian who tirelessly and lovingly cared for her brood of eight children in the heart of Brooklyn, New York.  During the days when the Allied invasion of Europe was underway, and her husband Leif was serving in the U.S. Army  Florence had to bear that responsibility as a parent alone, serving in the Red Cross as well. Those were days when  the family needed to relocate, she would drive her children thousands of miles across the country in an old Model T Ford.  On many a night, often when the family endured the rigors of air raid drills, Florence would break into a flood of sobbing, not knowing if or when her beloved Leif would return home from the battlefield.  Such was the rising tide of hope when she and the family travelled across the country to meet Leif upon his return to the States after his tour of service.

Florence was a woman who with simplicity and openness led her children by example, leading them to sing and share their faith on the street corners of New York City ( sometimes having rotten tomatoes thrown at them by passersby). She was a woman of generous spirit, not only towards her own, but to those who were destitute and in need. She would not hesitate to come to the defense of her own when they were in trouble.

Her generous example lives on in  Brother Joseph, who like his mother, has endured transition and trial through his life, yet with an undiminished faith and commitment to our Lord and God.        -   Rev. Alex Thomas Nicotra

Shameful theft of memorial flowers from retreat house on Armed Forces Day.

We are saddened to share that on a day of prayer honoring the men and women who have served in our armed forces,  three of our memorial flower hangings were stolen from the front of our retreat house in Nanticoke Acres, Seaford, Delaware.

Our disabled senior pastor who turns 76 this coming Christmas Day, recovering from multiple major cardiac surgeries, and battling severe chronic and postoperative pain night and day, paid $40.00 for the flowers from his own disability pension so they could be presented for the enjoyment and inspiration of the community.

To all concerned: A photo of the remaining flower hanging is posted here for reference as to what the stolen hangings look like. If the stolen ones are found, please contact the non-emergency police at 302-855-2980 and post a reply to this forum post to let us know.

Many thanks on behalf of our servicemen and servicewomen, and veterans as we look forward to Memorial Day and to the 70th. anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy.

Police cars that have high mileage, the Sheriff not showing up three times in a row to justify almost a Million Dollar request to replace literally the entire fleet of Sheriff Department cars. What is going on?

Not once, or twice but on THREE consecutive County Council Budget Workshops the Sheriff did not even bother to come before the County Council and make the case for a safe "Office" for his Deputies. But then again, one only has to look at perhaps one of the reasons why it's not a priority for the Sheriff. As was said earlier, the Sheriff has a nice office on Woods road AND he made sure he has a nice mobile "Office" as he ordered himself a Chevrolet Tahoe for himself last year at a cost of over $48,000 tax payer dollars. His Deputies replacement cars that year? Apparently not important. 

In a puzzling strategy, the Sheriff calls upon friends and local politicians to plead his case for more cars after he does not show up THREE times. These people are sticking their heads out without knowing all the facts. 

So in the end, the Sheriff’s Office will get five new cars, the Sheriff is still happy as he travels off-duty to Salisbury and Easton to shop with his family in his new tax payer bought Chevy Tahoe. I would not be surprised that as he is out shopping in that luxury SUV, that he passes a Deputy in an old run down "office of a car".

Prayer:  Father, we thank and praise You this Mother's Day for the example of  mothers and of all women who exemplify Your character traits in their families and everyday lives.   We honor all  those mothers today who sacrificially care for their children and families every day, and hold them up to You in prayer.  We honor the example of  Mary, the human mother of Jesus, for her example of being yielded to Your will for her.  We pray for all who have suffered the loss of their mothers, that they will find in You a loving care that will never forsake them.   We praise and thank You for the example of Your Son Jesus, Who through His words and example demonstrated the equal worth that women  have in Your eyes along with men, often including them in His inner circle as He did His disciples. May this Mother’s Day be an occasion for men and women alike to discover each other’s worth to  Your honor and glory, and to rediscover the valued role of mothers in Your eyes.  This we pray in the Name of Jesus, Who when He hung on the Cross in His dying moments, looked at His mother and at His disciple John,  saying to His mother. “Woman, behold your son.”, and turning to John, said. “Behold your mother.” Amen.

This hymn was a favorite of our senior pastor’s mother, Florence Stanley, who cared for her eight children on her own while her husband was away in the U.S. armed forces fighting in North Africa during World War II. She sang this hymn while she drove her eight children across the country in an old Model-T Ford during her work for the Red Cross, driving through the mountains on treacherous roads in a day before the major highways were built. Even in the midst of her responsibilities to care for the children and for the household, she taught by example the virtues of compassion and generosity for the less fortunate.

FivebyOne hereby is thanked for the response and the link. However, when followed, the link comes up with something at variance with 5x1's description:

 

Yock-A- Mein Recipe ------found at the following website:

8.25 oz. package cooked rice noodles
Chopped cooked pork meat
GF Catsup (Heinz)
GF soy sauce
Salt to taste
Chopped onions
Hard boiled eggs
GF ground red pepper
Cook noodles by package instruction. Cool. Combine all the ingredients and cool before serving.

Yock-a-mein, yat gai mein or yat gaw mein. The recipe for this, short of going to your favorite Chinese restuarant and politely asking for it, is virtually impossible to find. A search for Yat or Yock on the internet returned no recipes.

Given that a worker will produce the same amount of work per hour.. you must charge more to to get the job done

I figured out why the politicians so anxious to raise the minimum wage. It's because their policies have failed. They are raising the minimum wage because since the recession so many people have jumped onto social programs that they’ve unwittingly created a class of people who can’t afford to get off the dole. They won’t tell you that’s their motive, but they’re going force Mr. and Mrs. business person to raise their hourly pay so they will be competitive with welfare benefits.


If you can sit home making more than $10 an hour doing nothing and hustling on the side, why work?


Minimum wage is for entry level work. It's not meant to be any more than that. Leave it alone and let the market dictate what it should be based on the job and the location where the business is located.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)—Maryland lawmakers consider a bill to legalize marijuana for sale to adults 21 and older. It’s the latest in a series of proposals over the controversial drug.

Pat Warren has more on the pros and cons.

Up to now, it’s been mostly a medical issue in Annapolis, but momentum is growing in the areas of public safety, civil liberty and money for the state.

That first legal toke in Colorado fires debate in Maryland over whether it is good public policy to legalize marijuana.

Supporters include members of law enforcement.

“Sixty percent of the profits made by drug dealers out there today come from marijuana sales,” said Neill Franklin, law enforcement against prohibition.

The ACLU calls it a racial justice issue.

“In Baltimore City, African-Americans are 68 percent of the city. They are 92 percent of all arrests,” said Sara Love, Maryland ACLU.

Some members of the General Assembly see it as common dollars and sense.

“We say let’s have the government regulate it, tax it. We can raise more than $100 million a year. We’ll stop wasting law enforcement resources,” said Sen. Jamie Raskin (D) Montgomery County.

But despite this joint effort to legalize marijuana in Maryland, the outcome this year is dubious.

“You have to understand the lay of the land. Governor O’Malley’s against it, Speaker Busch is against it,” said Mike Miller, Senate President.

But polls show a majority of people, like John Burchett Jr., are OK with it.

“I think so. I think it would cut down on crime too. A lot,” Burchett said.

Still there’s very vocal opposition.

“Absolutely not. I mean most people who get on stronger drugs start with pot, don’t they?” said Rose Anne, against legalization.

For others, it’s not an issue.

“For me personally I would be against it, but for other people, they may feel differently, so I’m not one to judge,” said Corey Lewis.

The bill is being introduced in the House.

Maryland still hasn’t been able to provide medical marijuana, although a law was passed allowing it.

The latest bill is sponsored by Baltimore City Del. Curt Anderson.

US Navy sailors had radioactive snow ball fights off Fukushima

The only way the radiation could get into the snow is if it was airborne and got trapped in it as it fell

It seems unlikely that this could occur... if there was enough radiation in the air to cause poisoning in trapped snow it would be a much bigger story than this by now

Now it may be possoble an enemy released a plume of radiactivity to fall on the ship in the snow.. but even that seems pretty unlikely

CAMBRIDGE - Delmarva Community Services, Inc. (DCS) leaders and supporters broke ground Dec. 13 on Chesapeake Grove Continuing Care Community, planned to offer state-of-the-art senior and intergenerational services.

As its first priority, the multi-million-dollar project on Chesapeake Drive beside the current DCS building will bring a modern intergenerational center to the region, replacing DCS's existing one. The center will give seniors more choices in programs, services, clubs and classes made available in small group settings.

The site will then add three housing units for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Each building will contain approximately 29 one- and two-bedroom units featuring kitchens and laundry facilities, including some units with washers and dryers.

The apartments will provide residents immediate access to the services and facilities within the Intergenerational Center and will have easy access to the Delmarva Community Transit network.

The third stage will bring two senior assisted living buildings to the site. Each will have 15 units for residents who need a higher level of assistance but do not require nursing home care.

DCS anticipates providing a continuum of services including in-home assistance and support for couples in which one partner may live in the senior housing, while the other resides in an assisted living unit.

All areas of the site will be fully handicapped accessible. There will be access to medical care, with a nurse on staff, along with certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and Geriatric Nursing Assistants (GNAs).

The Chesapeake Grove Intergenerational Center will provide experiences designed to enhance the lives of adults and children through shared experiences within the 50,000-square-foot facility and among the wider community.

The center's concept was inspired during a visit by CEO/President Santo Grande to St. Anne's Center in Milwaukee, Wisc., where staff work to meet residents' spiritual, psychological, social and physical needs, through an extensive array of services and facilities.

After a discussion with Sister Edna Lonergan, president of St. Anne's Center, Mr. Grande decided to use the Wisconsin site as a model for Chesapeake Grove.

A prepared statement from DCS said, "The Chesapeake Grove Intergenerational Center will bring several services under one roof, but in a space designed specifically to address modern expectations for community services and facilities. The space has been designed to be welcoming, encourage spontaneous interactions, convey a community-like feeling, create new opportunities for senior activities and interests, and to encourage a family atmosphere among its staff and visitors."

The space will also include new possibilities for gardening, outdoor recreation, exercise, meditation, and therapeutic treatments. Medical adult day care and day habilitation services will also be available.

"Most important will be the genuine interactions among seniors, individuals with disabilities and children," the statement said. "The St. Anne's Center has proven that this model works and how mutually therapeutic/beneficial this type of shared community space can be among the wider community when combined with programming."

The center's programming will be framed around four areas of experience:

Being active together/Being healthy - Congregate meals, exercise, meditation

Being engaged together/Being needed - Clubs, gardening and exercise, civic engagement, helping each other, cooking

Being continual learners/Being understood - Classes, informative speakers, library and reading together, current events

Being happy together/Being accepted - Making and listening to music, making and observing art, drama and performance, travel and learning.

I have the same question... if you do not have to agree to anything to read a post it is my belief it is in the public domain

In reading the law.... yes you likely do have rights to it... but you are a fool to publish anything with registering it or making people check a box they understand

I honestly believe this tactic of claiming copyrights to get sites shut down is way overblown

Equality Maryland Endorses Anthony Brown in Governor’s Race

Equality Maryland PAC, the political action committee for the Free State’s major LGBT right organization, issued a list of endorsements for the 2014 election season, throwing its support to several General Assembly incumbents who have established themselves as strong allies for the LGBT movement, as well as the ticket of Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and his running mate, Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, in their campaign for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively.

Equality Maryland PAC’s endorsement of Brown for the state’s top office is likely to raise some eyebrows, as it snubs Del. Heather Mizeur (D-Montgomery Co.), an out lesbian seeking to become Maryland’s first female governor. Mizeur has been one of Equality Maryland’s strongest allies in the General Assembly since her election in 2006, serving as one of chief defenders and public advocates of the law legalizing same-sex marriage, both during the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions and the ensuing ballot initiative that sought to uphold it. Maryland voters later chose to uphold the law in November 2012 by a 52-48 margin. Mizeur has also been a high-profile advocate of several of Equality Maryland’s other initiatives, including the push for nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in the areas of employment, housing, credit and public accommodations.

It is  beginning to look like any candidate that governor opposes legalaization of marijuana is committing political suicide...

I remember asking on a forum last year if folks thought we could petition to get marijuana legalization on the ballot.

It looks like that is a moot question now... Politicians are jumping up and supporting legalization like bees drawn to a hive....

Thanks for the input passing thru... I will watch Gansler environmental policies. Just curious though... I think saving the bay is a good thing although I know it costs money and does impact farmers and industry.. I hear you used to be able see oysters and softcrabs at the bottom of 5 feet of water back in the 60's. I would like to see the water restored to that clarity but I know I am dreaming. I really don't want to sacrifice the environment for prosperity.

 

I am still reeling from Perverts article. I have huge concerns about Browns capability to manage things if he spent 170 Million dollars setting up the health care exchange and there are only 3,200 enrolles. No one in the private sector would ever run a business that way. for that money we could have insured those 3000 people for thirty years. If this in fact true, then Brown is off my list I still the think the affordable care act is a good idea, but if there is widespread fraud in implementing it and improper planning than folks must be held accountable

Happy Winter Solstice

Santa Paws to visit Delmarva Community Services, Inc.

Joyce Coyne will portray Santa Paws on Saturday, from 9-11 a.m. at Delmarva Community Services, Inc. at 2450 Cambridge Beltway. Household pets can have their Christmas photos taken for just $10, and $8 for seniors. Proceeds will benefit DCS' Senior Program, especially its meal program.

CAMBRIDGE - Delmarva Community Services, Inc. has found a way for furry family members to take part in the Christmas season. Santa Paws will be at DCS at 2450 Cambridge Beltway on Dec. 14 from 9-11 a.m. to pose for photos with family pets.

The event will benefit DCS' senior program, especially meals.

The program, which feeds hundreds of aging citizens of Dorchester and Talbot counties, has been hard hit by recent cuts in federal funds. Additional cuts in food stamps have put many local seniors in danger of living in hunger.

The Cambridge Senior Center operates under the auspices of MAC, Inc., the designated agency for aging for Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. Former MAC board members Joyce Coyne, Clara Mae Stephens and Beverly Mullikin are helping to plan the event.

Santa Paws will be seated in a rocking chair in front of a Christmas display. Photos with Santa Paws will be $10 each, with a discounted rate of $8 each for seniors. Paper frames will be provided for the photos. Leashes or carriers are required.

Snacks will be available for all - cookies and hot chocolate will be on sale, and pet treats will be available.

Delmarva Community Transit awarded at TAM Conference

Delmarva Community Transit (DCT) leaders were recognized with three awards during the Transportation Association of Maryland, Inc.'s (TAM) annual conference and tradeshow at the Hyatt Resort Dec. 3-6. DCT is a division of Delmarva Community Services, Inc., the host agency for the conference. This event marked TAM's 25th year of offering educational and networking opportunities for transportation professionals from across the state. Among the topics discussed were federal and national updates, fleet planning, crisis management, succession and transition planning, legislative strategies and community transportation. During the awards ceremony on Dec. 4, from the left, DCS CEO Santo Grande was named Friend of Transportation, Denton Dispatcher Delores Greene received the Unsung Transit Hero of the Year award, and Driver Anthony Woolford was named Fixed-Route System Driver of the Year.

DCS' Cornish earns Jefferson Award

CAMBRIDGE - Even with a television camera rolling in front of her, she didn't think it was about her.

That kind of modesty probably had a lot to do with Gloria Cornish winning a Jefferson Award.

Ms. Cornish works in Cambridge as a financial counselor with the Community Action Center, a division of Delmarva Community Services, Inc. She learned she had won a Jefferson Award on Monday, while she was working a table at the Dorchester Department of Social Services' Resources Day at the Career and Technology Center.

Sitting with her colleague Rosetta Brown, ready to help others with her expertise on home foreclosure and household finances, Ms. Cornish didn't suspect anything unusual until people started applauding and she spotted her daughter Talibah Chikwendu and granddaughter Zakiya in the crowd.

When she learned about the award - and recovered from the surprise - Ms. Cornish shared some of her motivation, saying, "It's everybody's responsibility to take care of others when they can't take care of themselves."

Haddie Redmond knows something about that. She is the one who nominated Ms. Cornish for the award more than a year ago.

"Ms. Gloria had done so much for me when my husband had a stroke," Ms. Redmond said. "She deserves that. She deserves everything."

Ms. Cornish specializes in advising and assisting homeowners when they learn they are in the process of foreclosure. With her advice, many are able to negotiate with lenders and remain in their homes.

Community Action Program Manager Michelle Nichols said, "It's nothing for her to be on the phone with mortgage companies for two hours." Ms. Redmond remembered times when she even went to Ms. Cornish's home to complete paperwork.

"She helped me stay in my house," Ms. Redmond said.

Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard, the Jefferson Awards is America’s highest honor for public service, the organization's website said.

"We are one of the largest multipliers of volunteerism in the country – with youth in communities and in workplaces. Over 41 years, we have recognized a 'Who’s Who' of American change-makers and more than 50,000 unsung heroes in grassroots communities," the website said. "We accomplish that through a network of more than 110 media partners reaching into 30 million households."
The awards are named after Thomas Jefferson, because, the website said, "Thomas Jefferson reflects a spirit of excellence, entrepreneurship, leadership and giving back in America."

Cambridge Mayor Victoria Stanley congratulated Ms. Cornish, saying, "You're so deserving."

Ms. Cornish said, "As long as you're alive, there are certain things you're supposed to do."

The feature will be broadcast on WBOC Jan. 5-11, at least once every day. It will also be posted on the station's website.

Yard sale - $10 per table
Food for sale– scrapple sandwiches, fish sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, sodas, tea, baked goods.
Activities – cake wheel, dime toss, other children’s’ games

Raffle Drawing 12.30 p.m. - $1,500 1st prize, $500 2nd prize, T.V. 3rd prize
DCS provides a wide variety of services to the area, including public transportation, senior care, vocational training for individuals with developmental disabilities, financial counseling and a food pantry.

CAMBRIDGE - Delmarva Community Services, Inc. (DCS) is participating in this year's Maryland Day to Serve by organizing a community-wide food drive from Sept. 1–20. Hunger is a chronic problem on the Eastern Shore - statistics from the Dorchester County Department of Social Services showed that in 2012, 26.4 percent of the county's population was enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Vendors, businesses and organizations participating in this project would allow DCS to place a container at their location to accept donations. On Sept. 20, the pantry at the Community Action Center at 1000 Goodwill Ave. will be open to accept special donations - perishables, non perishables, and fresh produce - from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Food containers will be emptied each Friday by a representative of DCS and food will be weighed in at the Community Action Center. In the event that a container is full prior to Friday, a representative of the participating business/organization may contact DCS to arrange pick up.

Information from the Maryland Food Bank said the most needed items include canned meat and fish, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, beans, oatmeal, pasta, canned fruits and vegetables.

For the Day to Serve, citizens from across the state will join neighbors in Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia to conduct food drives and environmental cleanups.  In a letter to participants, Gov. Martin O'Malley said, "Last year's Day to Serve program was a great success. Due to the hard work of a coalition of religious, social and environmental organizations, more than 4,700 Marylanders volunteered."

In 2012, 237,000 pounds of food was donated to Maryland churches, community centers and food banks, while more than 200 service projects were organized. "This year, our goals are higher than ever," Gov. O'Malley said.

DCS would like as many businesses and organizations as possible to take part. Fresh & Green's and BB&T Bank have already joined the effort.

"I think this is something that we can all get behind and spread throughout the community to our churches and other organizations," DCS Program Manager Michelle Nichols said.

"I’m excited about the potential here," Ms. Nichols said. "No doubt, we will need every ounce of food that we receive to help us feed the hungry families in our community."

Do you know anyone who would benefit from FREE travel training on Delmarva Community Services' public transportation? We will have a trip to the Centre at Salisbury on Aug. 29. There will be an instructor with riders both ways. This can be a real help to folks who need to get some shopping done, but don't have a ride. Please spread the word! Thank you!

The Alzheimer’s or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging through Research and Education Training Program is a personal way to help families care for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease at home, where 60 to 70 percent live, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. 

The program for family caregivers or professionals consists of four classes: Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias Overview; Capturing Life’s Journey; Techniques to Manage Behaviors; and Activities to Encourage Engagement.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” organization was revealed last fall to include a long list of mayors who, because of their convictions, were no longer eligible to own weapons themselves.

Now another embarrassment has surfaced for the organization.

According to a report from the Second Amendment Foundation, Mayor James Schiliro, of Marcus Hook, Pa., now is facing a long list of charges for allegedly trying to force an underage boy to perform sex acts – and then firing one of three handguns he grabbed at a wall when the boy refused.

“Mayor Schiliro is one more example of why we started the ‘Gun Owners Against Illegal Mayors’ campaign,” said Alan Gottlieb, the organization’s executive director.

“He joins recently convicted former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and recently indicted former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, both of whom were MAIG members.”

SALISBURY – Help is on the way for economically disadvantaged dental patients, in the form of Delmarva Community Transit (DCT) buses.

DCT, a division of Delmarva Community Services, Inc., is offering transportation to the Eastern Shore Mission of Mercy 2013, a totally free, adults-only dental clinic on March 15 and 16. There will be no insurance requirement, co-pay or cost.

 

To register for a ride and learn departure times

  • From Dorchester County, call 410-221-1910. Buses will leave Cambridge from Fresh and Green’s parking lot.
  • From Talbot County, call 410-822-4155. Buses will leave Easton from the far end of the parking lot at Walmart.
  • From Caroline County, call 410-479-4974. Buses will leave Denton from the HAPS Building.
  • From Kent County, call 410-778-5187. Buses will leave Chestertown from Rose’s parking lot, away from the store.

 

Departure times from all sites are 5:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.

Riders must call by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 to register for a seat. Donations are encouraged but not required to ride.

All patients will be seen on a first come, first served basis - no appointments at all. Treatments will be limited to permit many patients to receive something.

The clinic will open at 6:00 a.m. each day, at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, 500 Glen Ave. in Salisbury. No children will be permitted on site.

over cost of programs

CAMBRIDGE – The future of regional transportation remains in question following Tuesday’s meeting of the Dorchester County Council, at which council members and officials of Delmarva Community Services, Inc. were unable to reach a funding compromise.

The council has linked DCS’ withdrawal of support to its South Dorchester senior satellite program – where 18 individuals are registered – to county contributions towards DCS’ fleet of 70 buses which serve the general public and the disabled on the Mid- and Upper Shore.

In Dorchester alone last year, nearly 200,000 rides were completed.

In a June 22 letter to DCS, Council President Jay Newcomb wrote, “…we would like to receive notification as to when the Golden Hill Center will reopen based on this fiscal year funding.”

Dorchester County’s level of support for DCS’ transit and care for the aging is well below that of the three other counties served by the agency. Dorchester’s allocation this year to transportation is $20,507, with $45,000 going to the senior centers.

According their websites, Talbot this year is allocating $90,500 to transportation and $163,155 to the senior center; Caroline has $75,000 for transportation and $46,362 to the senior center; and Kent has $94,419 for transportation and $100,804 to the senior center.

In relation to their total budgets, this represents .12 percent for Dorchester; .36 percent for Talbot; .29 percent for Caroline; and .46 percent for Kent.

The council cut support to DCS in fiscal 2011 by 50 percent, forcing the non-profit agency to reduce its Cambridge and Hurlock senior center operations to three days a week each. There was no money, however, to run the South Dorchester satellite, which up to that point had been funded solely by DCS.

Meal service and a single staffer were subsequently withdrawn from the satellite.

On July 3, the council rejected DCS’ compromise offer of reopening the site for two days a month. At that meeting, Councilman Rick Travers cast the only vote for compromise.

In the current fiscal year, the council has divided its $65,507 contribution, specifying $15,000 each for the two senior centers and for the satellite. The remaining $20,507 would go to fund medical transportation.

By specifying the use of the funds, however, the county has prevented DCS from using the money to leverage matching state and federal grants critical to the continued operation of the entire transportation system. “We needed to put the bulk of the money into transit,” DCS President/CEO Santo Grande said.

DCS Finance Director Cathy Frey said, “This designation of $15,000 for each site removes our flexibility.”

Councilman Newcomb questioned the original decision to withdraw all support to the satellite, saying “It’s just so hard to cut the seniors.”

Seniors from the program told the councilmen that they very much looked forward to attending the meetings once again with DCS support. They continue to gather periodically at the site, provided by a local church.

On Tuesday, Mr. Grande presented DCS’ most recent compromise offer, stated in a July 13 letter to County Manager Jane Baynard.

Mr. Grande wrote, “Our agency is willing to provide three days per month service to the DCS, Inc. South Dorchester satellite program during the months of September through May, (nine months). I would again like to remind you that the service during the summer is very difficult to provide because of a shortage of staff due to vacations, the cost of fuel and food. This compromise supplants our original desire to serve South Dorchester only two days per month for twelve months. I believe this proposal is significantly different and very generous in lieu of our original proposal to eliminate service to South Dorchester. Please remember that the key to quality senior services to the seniors of Dorchester County is the ability to provide them with safe and reliable transportation.”

Nancy Hastings of the South Dorchester Good Neighbor Project suggested that DCS offer 42 days a year, possibly with no hot lunch as a means of cutting expenses. Mr. Grande pointed out that meal service is an integral part of senior services.

After more than an hour of sometimes vigorous discussion, Councilman Travers supported the 42-day plan, adding, “I feel like we’re much closer than we have been.”

“If we don’t get this worked out, you don’t get the money you need, you don’t get transportation, nobody gets where they need to go,” he said.

Councilman William Nichols called for compromise while noting that the county has had its own state funding drastically reduced. “We’re going to have to meet in the middle,” he said. “We lost $4 million on a $54 million budget.”

He also cited the cost of teachers’ pensions and an impending drop in tax revenue following what he expects to be lower state property assessments.

“If everybody thinks it’s bad now, wait until next year,” he said. “I’m not crying, I’m telling you how it is.”

Council members and DCS officials agreed to discuss the issue further prior to the council’s next meeting on Sept. 4.

The buses do not go every place in Dorchester county, and at the time they go, some people would be late for work. And plus at $2.00 round trip, and $20.00 a week,

and $80.00 a month, it get to be expensive.  Plus for a person that has to be in work by 7 am lets say they for sure would be late.  And  the buses, they have serve different area's and do not go to the some places. At an early hour. Plus they stop the bus sevice at 5:30  pm so if a person gets out of work at 6pm or after good luck in getting home.  taxis do not run late at night either.  This town need some really good buses, that go all over, and some mass tranist, that would take people to Salisbury for work easton, and more.  We do not have that.

CAMBRIDGE – Times are tough all around, and they could get tougher for local senior citizens, the disabled and the general public following the Dorchester County commissioners’ 4-1 rejection of a funding compromise offered by Delmarva Community Services, Inc.

Leaders of the non-profit agency, employer of 200 local residents, were seeking a way to stretch limited funds to serve seniors, especially those at a small South Dorchester satellite program, while keeping its fleet of 70 buses on the road. The decision came during the councilmen’s July 3 meeting.

Councilman Rick Travers (District 3) cast the sole vote for compromise.

Rejection of the compromise means the county government no longer provides matching funds needed to leverage state and federal grant money necessary to keep the award-winning public transportation system operating.

The compromise was specified by DCS President/CEO Santo Grande in a June 27 letter to County Manager Jane Baynard.

Mr. Grande wrote, “Since our agency must have [county] matching cash funds to draw down Public Transportation Section 5311, we are requesting that $15,000 be allocated to assist with opening our South Dorchester satellite program two days per month or every other Wednesday…The balance of $50,507 would be committed to the required matching funds for public transportation.”

Councilmen who voted to reject the compromise were Jay Newcomb (District 1), William V. Nichols (District 2), Rick Price (District 4) and Tom Bradshaw (District 5).

Delmarva Community Transit, a branch of Delmarva Community Services, Inc. (DCS) was named the best rural transportation system in the nation in 2007 by the Community Transportation Association of America. Thousands of county residents depend on the routes to take them to their jobs, doctor’s offices and pharmacies, as well as to buy groceries and other necessities.

The buses completed more than 200,000 passenger trips in Dorchester in 2011. All are equipped with wheelchair lifts.

The transit system is an integral part of the organization’s wide-ranging programs, which serve senior citizens, the general public, veterans, individuals living in poverty, the developmentally disabled and the Spanish-speaking community.

The council has linked its funding to DCS with last year’s closing of South Dorchester’s Golden Hill satellite program for seniors, which served about 20 individuals. In a letter from County Manager Jane Baynard signed by Councilman Jay Newcomb to Mr. Grande dated June 22, Mr. Newcomb wrote, “I am writing on behalf of the County Council of Dorchester County regarding the fiscal year 2012-2013 budget…In particular, we would like to receive notification as to when the Golden Hill Center will reopen based on this FY funding.”

DCS runs senior centers in Hurlock and Cambridge, both of which are open to all county seniors. Both operate primarily on state money.

Following Hurricane Irene in 2009, DCS leaders recognized a need for a center in South Dorchester, and began a program there, paying for it from DCS’ own limited funds.

In fiscal year 2010, the Dorchester County Council contributed $131,013 to DCS’ operations. In fiscal 2011, this was cut to $65,507, despite warnings from DCS that this would adversely affect programs – though DCS receives funds from a variety of sources, virtually all of it is restricted for specified uses and cannot be transferred.

DCS was then forced to reduce its senior centers’ operations to three days a week, though the schedule was staggered in such a way between Hurlock and Cambridge that service could still be offered to all the county’s seniors four days a week.

There was no way, however, for DCS to maintain the South Dorchester satellite program out of its own pocket, and the organization withdrew its meal service and single staff member.

In deliberations for the fiscal year 2012-2013 budget, the councilmen specified $15,000 each for the Hurlock and Cambridge senior centers, with another $15,000 for the Golden Hill satellite, and $20,507 marked for medical transportation. An additional $32,201 will go to developmental disabilities services.

By specifying how the funds are to be used – something the council had not done in previous years – the councilmen prevented DCS leaders from using $65,000 as they had in the past, to leverage state and federal funds for transportation, as required by law.

In a letter to a local newspaper, DCS Board of Directors Chairperson William Batson wrote, “Because of our decision to reduce service days to our senior centers, the council made a hasty decision to earmark future allocations for senior center services only, thus leaving other programs like transportation and services to the homeless and people in poverty without county support. Such earmarking also affects seniors needing transportation and home-delivered meals. In other words, the council will give us half the usual funding and then tell us how to spend the money without a clear understanding as to how we prioritize the services to meet the most critical needs.”

Wish they hadn't changed the forums because it seems so many who used to participate are no longer here to receive this news. I did know that about shock trauma; yes, it would seem toxic or septic shock would be the cause for entrance. I did not know Farmer in person but he shared so much of himself that when I read the obituary, it was precisely in line with everything he represented here. I know he enjoyed making wine from grapes he grew; that was a subject we discussed because I am friends with a farming family who is starting to do the same.

I ask the family's forgiveness if I get this wrong (and remain miffed we can't edit our posts if something is wrong). To my understanding, he was working outside, got a cut or bite or something, that became badly infected. I am not sure if an amputation needed to be done or not.

 

I'm sure you know, but others might not, that medical shock includes non-trauma occurences, so I am guessing he was at shock-trauma for perhaps septic shock.

 

I think his mishap occurred in mid, if not early, spring.

 

He will be missed indeed. He was one of the first Zap members I came across on the old forum and I enjoyed his posts.
